Mass of the Children   John Rutter
Serenade in D Minor   Antonin Dvorak
with Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra and
Concordia Treble of the Nittany Valley Children's Choir

Mass of the Children by John Rutter is a Missa Brevis in five movements to which several English texts have been added. The theme of a progression from waking to sleeping runs through the work as a counterpart to the liturgy of the Mass. The children’s part, performed by Concordia Treble of the Nittany Valley Children’s Choir, is integral to the piece.

Voices of the Holocaust   Sheridan Seyfried

Voices of the Holocaust, commissioned by the Choral Society in 2004, weaves 22 songs from the concentration camps into an inspiring full-length choral work. Written for chorus, children’s choir, four soloists, string quartet, and obbligato instruments, the piece showcases the talent of Sheridan Seyfried, a gifted young composer from the Curtis Institute.

April 2006
A Child of Our Time  Sir Michael Tippett      with the Nittany Valley Symphony

Written in 1941 in response to events that forebode the horrors of the Holocaust, Sir Michael Tippett’s A Child of Our Time is a passionate protest against persecution and tyranny. The tripartite structure of the piece, reminiscent of Handel’s Messiah, is enhanced by the inspired use of five negro spirituals, similar to Bach’s use of chorales in his works.
